Unusual Rectangular Swage Block
Rectangular Swage Block:
This unusual rectangular block has some good and some bad design features.
The good features are the well organized shape features and holes arranged progressively.
The bad part of this design is the two very weak corners at the top.
These commonly break off under heavy use.
The most curious feature of this block is the rectangular hole in the center.
It serves no useful purpose for forging.
However, it prevents there from being a heavy thick section in the block which is difficult to cast well.
The large radius on the end is typical of blocks used by wheel wrights as it is handy for making wagon wheel size bends and dressing kinks in wagon tires.
Several catalogs have listed this block as a #0 with the weight between 165 and 170 pounds.
